Cape Town - Greenmarket Square
Green Market Square is cosily situated in the heart of Cape Town. Several museums, arts & crafts markets as well as an abundance of other worthwhile attractions surround it.
The market was established in 1710 between Whale Street and Longmarket Street. The Burgher Raad decided that it should be a vacant space. Until 1724 the farmers used to outspan in front of the old Watch House, but in that year they were driven from the square and made to outspan higher up the slopes. The Old Town House, completed in 1761, took the place of the Watch House.
It was not really until 1806 that the square received the status of a vegetable market. For the rest of the nineteenth century Greenmarket Square remained a vegetable market, with coloured umbrellas sheltering the vegetables, in front of the Old Town House.
Then, in the 1920s the square became a car park and remained one until 1962. Now, however the square has been proclaimed an historical monument.
Today one can buy African art, clothes and textiles, jewellery, flowers, fruits, and vegetables on a daily basis.
Numerous little cafes and bars surround the market and invite you to relax over a glass of South Africa wine.
The Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, with its excellent shopping centre, cafes and restaurants, is just a short 5-minute drive away.
